Ciaté Liquid Velvet Matte Lip Slick in “Envy” Review and Swatches

We’ve finally arrived in April! We’re now 1/4 of the way through the year! How have you been spending your time lately? Here in SoCal it’s been pretty cold and windy but the weather has been beautiful.

Today I’ll be reviewing a product that’s appeared before in my post about playing with color: the Ciaté Liquid Velvet lipstick in the shade Envy.
Description on the Ciaté website:

Envy- deep teal

What it is:
A long-wearing and ultra-vibrant, moisturizing matte liquid lipstick formulated with Hyaluronic Acid.

What it does:
Liquid Velvet™ Matte Lip Slick combines highly pigmented, gorgeous matte longwearing lip color with Hyaluronic Acid for its intense lip-conditioning benefits to help make lips look fuller, while feeling more supple and smooth.

The creamy, non-drying formulation is infused with Ciaté’s proprietary blend of moisturizing PlushPigment™, and features high-performance pigments that glide on to lips for bold, kissable color with extreme hold.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
– Parabens
– Sulfates
– Phthalates

I know this color is a little unusual, it’s a bright blue with green undertones which may not be everyone’s style. I wanted to review this product anyway because this is a brand that I don’t think is very popular in the US among young MUAs. I had never heard of it until I saw it randomly in Sephora. Hopefully this review will give you an idea of what the formula is like so if you decide to get a different color you can make an informed decision on what the formula is like.

I love liquid-mattes as you can probably tell. It’s also the trend right now so every brand out there has their version of a liquid-matte lipstick. With so many to choose from how are you supposed to pick a formula?

Ciaté just launched their line of liquid mattes. The first thing I noticed about this color is that it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of Lime Crime’s Peacock which I do not have because it was a limited edition shade that came in a trio with two colors I didn’t want. I DID want the blue and this comes close. I really love the teal color. It’s pretty, it makes your teeth look white, and I think it flatters most skin tones. I have a lot of yellow in my skin and this doesn’t bring that out so I don’t look sallow.

First Impression:
It comes with a doe foot applicator and 0.22oz of product. It’s the same size as the Kat VonD Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks and it is about the same price $19USD.

When applying, it goes on smoothly and mattes up immediately taking about two or three minutes to dry. So far so good, it applies like any regular liquid-matte formula.

I noticed while wearing it that my lips did not dry out at all. I’m really impressed with how moisturizing this formula is. I have not yet run into a liquid matte that felt so soft on my lips. The formula contains Hyaluronic Acid which it claims helps lips look fuller. I didn’t notice this effect while wearing it, but when I look at the photos below my lips do look fuller than usual. Usually products that plump your lips cause a tingling sensation but the formula literally feels like nothing at all.

I gave the lipstick about five minutes to dry completely before trying the transfer test which you can see below: image

The lipstick is not transfer-proof. In the gif you can see the blue product on the back of my hand.

Speaking of transferring,

I do not consider this a longwearing formula.  You’ll have to retouch it every few hours. I wore this to a concert and I wasn’t sweating and I wasn’t eating or drinking yet after about four hours my lips were a faded mess. I hadn’t touched it up and most of the color had come off.

I don’t consider 4 hours to be long wearing. I don’t know if there’s a clear definition for longwearing but it’s probably pretty subjective. To some people 6 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours would be considered longwearing. With most of my makeup, I have a “set it and forget it” attitude, especially with lipstick. I hate hate hate being out somewhere and having to worry about my lipstick smudging or coming off. I like when lipsticks last 6+ hours without smearing or fading. If you are okay with touching up your lipstick or somewhere where you don’t need it to last so long, this is still a great product.

What the formula looked like after 4 hours of wear.

Overall, I would still recommend this brand just because of how soft the formula is. I’m even considering getting more colors from this brand just because it is SO moisturizing. I can’t stress how comfortable this lippie is. This by far beats out even the best liquid-mattes I’ve tried such as Lime Crime or Nyx’s Soft Matte Lip Creams. Those are the least drying of all that I’ve tried, but they still feel like you’re wearing a dry lipstick and require your lips to be properly primed and exfoliated before applying. This lipstick literally feels like you’re wearing nothing. My lips stay soft the whole time and don’t crack or feel dry.

I think the color and the formula deserve 5 stars.

Envy is a limited enditon shade but there are currently a total of 13 shades available on the Sephora website for $19 USD each.
